Speech and language therapy.
Help with speech and swallowing.

Speech and language therapists assess and treat difficulties with speaking, understanding, thinking for communication and swallowing. These needs can follow a stroke, head injury, surgery or neurological condition.

Speech Therapy

When therapy may help

An adult may have trouble speaking, finding words, understanding language or swallowing after a stroke, head injury, neurological condition or head and neck surgery. A therapist assesses the difficulty before recommending care.

Communication

Therapy can work on speaking, listening, reading and writing. Some people benefit from pictures, devices or other ways to express themselves. The goal is to help the person communicate in daily life.

Swallowing

A therapist can assess swallowing and feeding difficulties and recommend exercises or other support suited to the person. The clinical team agrees how the plan fits with other care.

Ask about an assessment

Ask Medwell's team how a speech and language therapist can assess the person's communication or swallowing needs in the relevant care setting. The team can explain any referral and how therapy would fit the wider care plan.

GOOD TO KNOW

What to discuss

  • Is the difficulty with speech, understanding or swallowing?
  • Has a clinician assessed the change?
  • Can therapy be arranged in the relevant setting?

Medwell can confirm the care and local arrangements after discussing the person’s needs.

Talk through the next step

Tell Medwell where care is needed and what has changed. The team can discuss the service and what can be arranged.
