A bit of background – My wife had a serious fall which caused a brain haemorrhage and 3 days later suffered a stroke which resulted in complete left side paralysis. When Medwell services were contracted, she was 100% dependant, could not sit, stand or use the bathroom. She had no use of left arm or leg. Later she developed mood swings including delusions. This requires a dedicated carer who has specialised skills, experience and approach. Over the past 2 years we have had 2 night shift and 5 day shift carers, with different skills and competence, affording us the opportunity to evaluate their individual approach and effectiveness.
Patricia has a ‘larger than life’ personality.
She has an excellent rapport with Yvonne.
She has a very positive effect on Yvonne and has done more than anyone to help advance her rehabilitation, constantly showing empathy and initiative.
She is fully involved and brilliant in assisting with the rehabilitation (physical and mental exercises), often handling some without my assistance. She is attentive and participates with the OT and Physio visits. Yvonne’s progress has greatly benefited from Patricia’s input.
Patricia has on many occasions brought Yvonne back from difficult negative and depressive moods. She reads the situation well and knows when to intervene and when to step back.
Her shifts are full of fun and laughter, something that contributes enormously to reducing stress and anxiety both of which set the rehabilitation progress back.
She assists Yvonne in walking without using the walker – encouraging her at all times to push harder. I fully trust her with this, something I could not do the with others. The Physio is also pleased with this initiative.
She goes way beyond her duty and unasked, virtually runs the household, removing dead flowers, watering plants, making shopping lists, loading the laundry etc.
Faultless with hygiene.
She has a kind and generous nature - on 3 occasions giving Yvonne personal gifts.
She is sensitive to, and knows when, to give us privacy.
Her work ethic is ‘not just a job, but definitely a ‘calling’.
Makes my life easier and more manageable.
